Expedition Leaders

The most important piece of safety equipment we issue our teams is their Expedition Leader.

Technical Qualifications

All of our Expedition Leaders, without exception, must be qualified outdoor instructors possessing a minimum Certificate IV Outdoor Recreation or equivalent University Course in Australia & Diploma in Outdoor Instruction & Management (Level 5) from NZ. We believe this is the only way to ensure competent supervision of trekking activities overseas.

Professional Experience matched to itinerary

There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to allocating our Leaders.  We profile all of our itineraries and ensure they are led by instructors with the requisite experience in specific environments (such as in the jungle or trekking at altitude).

Experienced developing world travellers

Things can be a bit different in many of the countries we work in, and that’s why we ensure that domestic technical qualifications are coupled with at least a month of developing world travel experience in all of our Expedition Leaders.

Continuous assessment and development

We are constantly looking at ways in which we can support the continuous professional development of our Leaders, ensuring their skillset grows alongside their experience.

We employ the best Leaders that the Outdoor Industry has to offer:

1. APPLICATION
2. SCREENING PROCESS

Where we check potential leaders qualifications and references.

3. POTENTIAL LEADER COURSE

Three day intensive course involving assessment of practical and expedition skills with peers.

4. WORLD CHALLENGE SUMMIT

A one day event for all School Leaders, Expedition Leaders and Assistant Leaders. Covers all health, safety and destination information.

5. FEEDBACK & REVIEW

Leaders may be required to travel as an assistant leader on their first expedition.

6. ONGOING TRAINING

Including high altitude, jungle, water safety and psychological wellbeing training.
