When it comes to training, safety and back-up, we like to set the standard in the outdoor industry. Our extensive training prepares World Challenge staff for every eventuality. It also enables us to provide the highest level of operational support possible and helps to continually review and improve our established procedures.
Our top safety priorities are:
- 24-hour Operations Centre fully equipped and manned
- Thorough risk assessments carried out prior to and during every expedition
- Medical advice from a world expert in expedition medicine
- Latest satellite communication equipment
- Ability to divert expeditions to alternative destinations up to the time of departure
Safety in the field
A safe expedition starts with a good Expedition Leader, with a balance of qualifications and experience. Many of our Leaders are professional outdoor instructors or members of the uniformed services with extensive expedition training. All have completed first aid training, police screening, our rigorous training course as a minimum, have experience of working with young people and must have relevant mountain, jungle or desert experience. Advance preparation, equipment, and an extensive network of resources also help keep participants safe on expedition.
Safety behind the scenes
World Challenge takes full responsibility for the safety of each expedition, ensuring plenty of support should things go wrong. We operate a 24-hour duty system to manage large and small incidents and have extensive emergency resources such as First Assist (which has access to a network of emergency evacuation facilities and screened blood). “On duty” means that a team in our Operations Centre is waiting for your call or e-mail, rather than sitting at home with a mobile phone.
In addition
We have a close working relationship with numerous agencies, Embassies, High Commissions, Foreign and Commonwealth Offices. Diplomatic missions operating in the expedition destination are made aware of World Challenge activities so they can provide help and support if necessary. Whilst we have an excellent safety record and serious incidents are highly unlikely, we are proud to offer a level of back-up support unmatched by any other provider.
