Malaysia Jungle
Introduction to the Malaysia expedition |
![]() |
| This exciting expedition gives teams the option to experience a wide variety of spectacular landscapes from dense jungle and mountainous scenery to stunning sandy beaches and tropical islands. Peninsular Malaysia is the long finger of land extending down from Thailand which points towards Indonesia, Singapore and Australia. Much of the peninsula is still covered by dense jungle, particularly in the north. These are some of the most ancient rainforests in the world, having remained virtually unchanged for millions of years. The west coast is flanked by a long fertile plain and on the eastern side mountains descend steeply to a stunning sandy coastline with numerous coral reefs and marine parks to be explored. |

The people of Malaysia come from numerous ethnic groups mostly Malay, Chinese and Indian, and there are still a few remaining indigenous groups of Orang Asli living in traditional kampongs. The climate is typically tropical, hot and humid all year round. The temperature rarely drops below 20oC and climbs to 30oC or more during the day. Rainfall, when it comes, tends to be short and sharp and is soon replaced by more sunshine.
Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Malaysia will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

Acclimatisation
Cameron Highlands
This is Malaysia's most extensive hill station covered by tea plantations at an altitude of 1,500 - 1,800m. Here it is considerably cooler and a good location to trek amongst the rolling hills and forests. There is a distinct colonial feel and trekkers can even be rewarded with a cream tea after a long day spent walking!
Tasik Chini
A mystical system of 12 lakes covered in lily flowers, teams can enlist the help of a local guide to plan their treks in the surrounding forest areas. Perhaps they will also discover the legend of the creature of the lakes?
Main Trekking phase
Kenong Rimba National Park
A beautiful park which boasts some lovely trails to numerous waterfalls and cave systems. The park is still relatively unexplored and a visit here offers a fascinating jungle experience away from the more established trails found in Taman Negara. Kenong Rimba can also be used for a good acclimatisation trek.
Taman Negara National Park
Home to some of the world's oldest and most diverse rainforest covering an area six times the size of Singapore, this is a scenic region of forested plateaux, hills and mountains, traversed by several rivers. A visit to the world's longest canopy walkway at the Park Headquarters makes a great start to your main trek, before trekking off into the depths of the jungle. There are several challenging trekking routes with many different waterfalls and caves to explore; one route starts at Tasik Kenyir, one of the largest man-made lake in South East Asia and takes you to the top of Gunung Gagau - a fantastic challenge for an adventurous and fit team.
Projects
There are many opportunities for different sorts of project work around Malaysia, from working in a nature reserve to carrying out valuable community work with orphanages and schools for special needs children in and around Kuala Lumpur. Past teams have re-built playgrounds, painted murals and helped with teaching. Environmental projects might involve working to create essential eco-tourism facilities, carrying out trail maintenance and vegetation mapping. It is usual for teams to do two projects during their expedition.
Rest and Relaxation
Malaysia has no shortage of "paradise-like" islands such as Tioman or the Perhentian Islands on which to relax in the sun and swim amongst the abundant marine life and corals for the last few days of the expedition.
