Leader application and selection
Application & Interview
- Submit your application If you meet our general qualifications we will contact you for a phone interview and to request references. Then we may invite you to participate in a Potential Leader Training & Assessment Course.

- Attend a Potential Leader Training & Assessment Course (PLC). All qualified Leader applicants are screened during a 4-day training course (transportation to the training location is not provided).
After the PLC you will either be approved to Lead an Expedition during the following season (we will make every effort to offer you a contract within 1 year of passing the PLC), or we will offer some suggestions on how to improve your base of experience in order to be considered for an Expedition at a later date.
- Contracts are confirmed on a first come, first serve basis. We start confirming Leader contracts about 10 months prior to expedition. The sooner you are able to confirm your availability the better.
- Your employment with World Challenge is as a casual member of staff, which means that you will receive a PAYG summary at the end of the financial year.
- As a Leader you will receive competitive pay and benefits. Leaders are an important part of the World Challenge team; we want to ensure that you feel that your contracts with us are worthwhile in addition to being developmental and rewarding.
- As part of your contract you will commit to:
a. Online interaction with your team – You will be asked to interact with your team through our online “Members’ Site”.
b. An Expedition Preparation Conference: One weekend (1-2 days) in April or May – all contracted Leaders are required to be available to attend a conference prior to their departure. Transportation to this conference is partially subsidized. Conference topics to be covered include:- Destination-specific workshops and trainings
- Up to date medical information
- Back up and safety systems
- Expedition leadership techniques
c. The Expedition: 1-4 Four weeks throughout the year – all Leaders must be available to lead an oversees expedition during this time period (or possibly during February or April school vacations). Most Expeditions begin 1 day before the team’s scheduled flight with a Build Up Day at the high school. Expedition Leaders run Build Up Day events for their team (gear checks, team rules, ice breakers, etc).
