Thailand expedition sample itineraries
Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Thailand will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.
THAILAND ITINERARY
Acclimatisation
Teams could travel to Kanchanaburi where trekking to the top of the seven tiered Erawan Falls would provide an ideal first taste of the jungle. Exploring the infamous Hellfire Pass will also provide a glimpse into living conditions of Allied POW's building the Thailand-Burma railway, as seen in the film 'Bridge on the River Kwai'.
Trekking
Teams will be able to head into pristine jungle and learn key survival skills under the expert tutelage of their local guides. Treks will also pass through hill tribe villages and teams will stay in stilt houses, witnessing first-hand the traditional lifestyles of their inhabitants.
Project
Thailand is still very much a developing country. Past teams have worked with the Uplands Holistic Development Project, who specialise in making the traditional lifestyles of Thailand's marginalised hill tribe communities sustainable and have been involved in genuine infrastructure improvement work such as the installation of water siphoning systems.
R&R
Teams will have the opportunity to travel south to islands such as Ko Chang or Ko Samet. Once there, teams could book themselves into a hostel, a beach hut, or even just arrange to sling their hammocks under the stars!
CAMBODIA & THAILAND ITINERARY
Acclimatisation
Teams could travel to Khao Yai National Park and explore the remote jungle, home to one of the largest wild elephant populations in Thailand, and the stunning Haew Suwat waterfall, featured in the film 'The Beach'.
Trekking
Teams will be able to head into pristine jungle and learn key survival skills under the expert tutelage of their local guides. Treks will also pass through hill tribe villages and some nights teams will stay in stilt houses, witnessing first-hand the traditional lifestyles of their inhabitants.
Project
Cambodia is one of the least developed nations in Asia, and World Challenge has many links with charities and NGO's in-country. Past teams have helped to improve facilities at an orphanage for children who had lost one or both parents to AIDS. There are many opportunities to work with a range of rural and urban projects.
R&R
Aside from visiting the mighty temples of Angkor, teams will have the option to travel south to islands such as Ko Chang or Ko Samet. Once there, they could book themselves into a hostel, a beach hut, or even just arrange to sling their hammocks under the stars!
THAILAND & LAOS ITINERARY
Acclimatisation
Teams will have the option of acclimatising in Laos or Thailand. In Laos teams could head up the Nam Ou River to explore the remote jungle-clad hills of Muang Ngoi, learning jungle craft from local guides whilst camping wild and passing through a traditional Lao village.
Trekking
Teams will be able to head into pristine jungle and learn key survival skills under the expert tutelage of their local guides. Treks will also pass through hill tribe villages and teams will stay in stilt houses, witnessing first hand the traditional lifestyles of their inhabitants.
Project
Teams working in Laos will have the chance to embed themselves in rural Lao communities and undertake genuine infrastructure improvement work. Past projects have included the construction of a primary school classroom, and preparatory work to connect electricity to a secondary school so they are no longer dependant on natural light to work.
R&R
Teams will have the opportunity to visit ancient temples, jungle-clad waterfalls and exotic night markets in Laos and may also be able to travel south to islands such as Ko Chang or Ko Samet. Once there, teams could book themselves into a hostel, a beach hut, or even just arrange to sling their hammocks under the stars!
