How to Book
Expedition at a glance...

Location: Peru, South America
Duration: 21 to 28 days.
Ideal for: A challenging and varied experience.
How tough 1-5 (5 being difficult): 4.
Typical accommodation: Hostels and tents.
Terrain: Forest, mountain, altitude, jungle and coast.
When can I travel there?: All year round.
Climate:Peru's climate varies considerably by region and altitude. The best time for trekking is Jun - Sep, when days are sunny but nights are cold. The Inca trail is often closed during the wettest months of Jan - Mar. The coast is quite hot and humid during those months, becoming cooler during the rest of the year. As one moves up into the mountains, night-time temperatures become colder. The eastern slope of the Andes, like the Amazon basin, experiences very heavy rainfall during the wet season, so best time to visit would be Apr - Oct.
Culture shock 1-3 (3 being very different from home): 3.

Peru expedition sample itineraries

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Southern Peru will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

SOUTH PERU

Acclimatisation
From Lima, teams can either head South towards Arequipa where they complete a number of different acclimatisation treks, or they can head East to Cusco where there is a variety of options, including treks to the ruins and markets of the Sacred Valley.

Trekking
In Arequipa, teams can trek in the Colca Canyon, which is twice the depth of the Grand Canyon or in the more remote Cotahuasi Canyon. Near Cusco, teams can trek to Machu Picchu on a beautiful and challenging alternative to the Inca Trail. Even further off the beaten track, there are remote ruins deep in the Sacred Valley and Andean mountain treks in the nearby Cordillera Vilcanota. These longer and more adventurous treks allow teams to explore the heart of rural Peru.

Project
Teams have the opportunity to learn about the Peruvian way of life, experiencing local culture and customs first hand. Projects could include helping villages to construct or renovate community buildings or working in an orphange or a local village school.

R&R
Teams could spend time on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, visit the Paracas Peninsula and Ballestas Islands or take part in a white water rafting trip.

NORTH PERU

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Northern Peru will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

Acclimatisation
There are numerous treks in the Cordillera Blanca region around Huaraz, including day walks to local ruins and hot springs or overnight trips along spectacular valleys to glacier fed lakes.

Trekking
In the Cordillera Blanca the Andean views are at their best with snow-capped mountains towering over crystal blue lakes. Trekking trails from 4-8 days include passes of up to 5000m, requiring a high level of fitness. Chachapoyas in the Northern Andes is a good base for relatively unknown treks at a lower altitude, which pass through little visited villages and pre-Inca sites.

Project
Teams have the opportunity to learn about the Peruvian way of life, experiencing local culture and customs first hand. Projects could include helping villages to construct or renovate community buildings, working in an orphanage or setting up recycling systems.

R&R
Peru contains many fascinating cultural sites including ancient ruins and colourful markets. Adventurous teams could choose to take part in a white water rafting trip and those visiting the far North of Peru could spend some time relaxing on one of the area's beautiful beaches.
