Expedition at a glance...

When can I travel there?: Expeditions possible all year round.
Climate: Costa Rica and Nicaragua experience average year-round temperatures of between 21°-27°C. The coolest months are from Nov-Jan, and the warmest from Mar-May. The nation’s climate is classically divided into rainy and dry. The dry season runs from Jan-May and the rainy season from May-Nov and December.

Costa Rica & Nicaragua expedition sample itinerary

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Costa Rica and Nicaragua will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

Acclimatisation
Explore the beautiful and pristine Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve, home to red frogs, sapphire quetzals, orchids, hummingbirds and thousands of other species of plants and animals. Alternatively, visit Ometepe Island to become accustomed to the heat and have the opportunity to climb one of two volcanoes.

Trekking
There are a range of fantastic treks available to teams, including hiking through the isolated, pristine rainforests of Costa Rica. Other options include attempting to Climb 5 volcanoes in 5 days on the Maribios volcanic chain, or climbing Costa Rica's highest peak, Cerro Chirripo.

Project
Teams carry out project work in rural communities in either Costa Rica or Nicaragua. This includes maintenance work or painting murals in schools with plenty of opportunity to meet local villagers and children. Teams may also have the chance to help out with turtle conservation work at the Pacuare Turtle Reserve on the Caribbean coast.

R&R
Throughout the expedition there are numerous opportunities for R&R activities including white-water rafting, relaxing on a beach on the palm fringed Caribbean coast or the more rugged Pacific side. There are also opportunities for sea kayaking that can be combined with hiking in the beautiful Corcovado Rainforest.
