Namibia & Botswana expedition overview
Namibia's mainland holds some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Africa. Namibia is a vast and impressive country located on Africa's south west coast where the scorched deserts that cover the country meet in dramatic style with the ice-cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
This spectacular coastline stretches the entire 1600km length of the country from the infamous Skeleton Coast in the north to the vast Namib Desert in the south.
The Kalahari Desert covers much of Botswana, home to the nomadic Bushmen famed for their powers of survival in a harsh and arid environment. To the north the Okavango River flows into the desert to form an inland delta, characterised by a myriad of channels and islands.
Frequently referred to as the jewel in the Kalahari's crown, this vibrant and lush ecosystem makes a startling contrast to the surrounding plains. All the major African game species gather here, drawn from the desert in search of a watering hole.
Expedition highlights
- Experience a true African welcome whilst living and working amongst a small community during your project phase.
- Silently glide through the Okavango's lush waterways in a dug out canoe.
- Enjoy a typical Braai (BBQ) of antelope, zebra and ostrich if you dare!
- Learn from the experts to live like a bushman in the Kalahari Desert.
- Cross the border into Namibia and try out sandboarding down Namibia's famous dunes!
- Experience an incredible wildlife safari
Things to know
- Don't forget a warm fleece in July and August as you can expect frost on your tent in the Kalahari Desert.
- The languages spoken in Botswana are English and Setswana. In Namibia English is spoken.
- Around 70% of Botswana is arid desert. In contrast, its largest water feature and the world's biggest inland delta, the Okavango Delta, is so vast that it can be seen from space.
- Handshaking is an important part of the normal greeting ritual - there is a three part handshake which is used in Southern Africa!
