Tanzania expedition sample itineraries

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Tanzania will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

Tanzania – Mt. Kilimanjaro or Mt. Meru trek

Acclimatisation
Teams will have an opportunity to stay in local villages, experiencing Pare culture, whilst trekking through the Pare Mountains. There are great views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, as well as Lake Jipe and Lake Nyumba ya Mungu. Acclimatisation treks will take you through cultivated areas and natural vegetation. Alternatively you may head to Longido Mountain. Ascending through dense bush, the summit is a peak of bare rock with fantastic views of the Rift Valley, Mt. Meru, Mt. Kilimanjaro and into Kenya. There may also be opportunities to meet the Maasai people of the area.

Trekking
Kilimanjaro option: At 5895m, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, is a real challenge. Teams will spend 6 days climbing the mountain and will experience many personal challenges along the way.

Mt Meru option: Often described as the "real" mountain of Tanzania, Mt. Meru stands at 4560m and presents an exciting challenge for an adventurous team. Walking through four different vegetation zones in Arusha National Park, the beginning of the trek gives fantastic opportunities to see every type of game.

Project
Previous teams have been able to work on many fulfilling projects that are greatly appreciated by the local communities. Examples include helping to provide a water supply to a primary school, renovating a kitchen and painting classrooms. The project is a great chance to interact on a more personal level with the local people and experience first hand the culture of Tanzania and a different way of life.

R&R
The safari is a chance to see all the diversity of African wildlife and with luck you will get to see the Big Five. Visit the famous Ngorongoro Crater or perhaps Lake Manyara National Park or Tarangire National Park. The Crater with its steep, unbroken walls provide the perfect backdrop for you to see lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests amongst the grassland, forests and swamps. Then head to the beach on the coast or to Zanzibar to relax on the sandy shores and explore the colourful craft markets. It may also be possible to arrange snorkelling trips and maybe even spot some dolphins

South Tanzania Expedition

Acclimatisation
The Udzungwa Mountains National Park is an area of dense tropical forest, rich in bird and plant life and home to many different species of monkey. Luhombero Plateau and Mwanihana Peak offer challenging climbs and trails through the rainforest, taking in waterfalls along the route.

Trekking
Livingstone Mountains - these are the most remote mountains in the Mbeya region as there are few roads passing through towards the Eastern shore of Lake Nyasa. Trekking in this area will take you through stunning scenery, featuring plateaus, waterfalls and small villages. You may also be able to visit the nearby Ngozi Crater Lake. This lies in the collapsed crater of an extinct volcano where teams might choose to camp and catch the sunshine.
