Expedition at a glance...

Location: South Africa.
Duration: 21 to 28 days.
Ideal for: A varied expedition with trekking on a variety of terrains.

When can I travel there?: All year round.
Climate:The inland plateau has a temperate climate (17°-30°C), whilst the coast is sub-tropical and more humid (22°-30°C). The seasons are the same as Australia however most of the rain falls in summer. Winters are dry and sunny, but nights can be very cold. The Western Cape is the exception with a "Mediterranean" climate - cool, wet winters and warm dry summers (17°-24°C).

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for South Africa will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

Acclimatisation
Teams can begin their expedition by heading South into the homeland of the Xhosa tribe to trek the rugged Wild Coast, exploring traditional Pondo villages whilst enjoying sweeping views over the Indian Ocean.

Trekking
For their main trek, teams can head up into the imposing majesty of the Drakensberg Mountains and pit themselves against the Giant's Cup trail. This route shadows the border with the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho and takes place against the spectacular backdrop of Quathlamba, the Battlement of Spears.

Project
Teams can undertake community development work in primary and secondary schools, build sports facilities for young South African children and participate in cultural exchanges with a vibrant and colourful tribal bantu populace.

R&R
Teams will have the opportunity to undertake a safari game drive in the renowned Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, home to lions, hippos, giraffe, hyenas and a quarter of the world's white rhino population.
