Malawi expedition sample itinerary

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Program Manager for Malawi will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

Acclimatisation
Teams can head to Dzalanyama or Viphya - beautiful Forest Reserves with abundant wildlife - or to the Zomba Plateau to explore the scenic hills and pine forests. In all cases you'll be camping, cooking for yourself, and get used to the swing of things in the 'warm heart of Africa'.

Trekking
Malawi offers two major challenges, an opportunity to scale the Mulanje Massif over 4 to 7 days, or to traverse the wild, remote and beautiful Nyika Plateau, starting from the highlands down to the shores of Lake Malawi. Further challenges include trekking from the highlands in Viphya or Luwawa through rural villages to the shores of Lake Malawi.

Project
You're bound to get a warm welcome on your project in Malawi. In the past few years teams have assisted at orphanage feeding centres, renovating the buildings, providing playground facilities and assisting with the day to day needs of local orphans. Teams have also been involved in rural school projects, repainting classrooms and building vegetable gardens to help supplement the students' diets.

R&R
Liwonde National Park and Vwaza Marsh hold great elephant and hippo spotting opportunities in their lush riverine waterways, and most teams chose to spend a couple of days there on safari. There are also the golden sandy shores of Lake Malawi which offer a chance to chill out, catch fish and relax on the beach. Or visit the tea plantations and loads of colourful markets.
