Teacher Preparation

Our pre-departure training equips adult leaders so they have the confidence to watch over Challengers.

Teachers, (School Leaders) play a key role in both implementing World Challenge risk management strategies and maximising learning outcomes for their team of Challengers.

Expedition Planning Conference

As well as School Leader participation in Training Expeditions, every year our Expedition Preparation Conferences bring Expedition Leaders and teachers from Australia, New Zealand, the UK, America and the Middle East together to share expedition information and safety best practice.  A fantastic opportunity for networking and shared learning, our ‘EPCs’ ensure that all travelling adults set off fully informed and confident for their time away. Every Conference includes:

Risk management briefing

Delivered by a senior manager from within our Operations team, this session provides insight into our comprehensive safety and back-up mechanisms.

Medical presentation

Covering topics from traveller’s diarrhoea to the impact of altitude, this session sees an experienced travel doctor present to delegates on ways in which teams can safeguard their physical well-being whilst on expedition.

Psychological well-being

Introduced in 2014 and run by an experienced youth mental welfare professional, this session offers advice and strategies for ensuring teams are emotionally supported on expedition.

Destination and itinerary brief

These sessions give our expert Expedition Planners the opportunity to brief School Leaders details about the countries they will be travelling to, the World Challenge staff they’re likely to meet when they get there and the specific safety implications on the ground.  In-country staff are regularly flown in to support these briefs, ensuring that wherever possible teams have a familiar face to greet them in-country.

Scenario Workshops

Based on incidents that have taken place within the last 12 months, these sessions prompt discussions around how you would react to certain situations arising in-country and are an excellent forum for shared learning amongst our many repeat traveller School and Expedition Leaders.

Online Testing

All adult Leaders are required to complete a short online questionnaire prior to departure.  This helps us to ensure the wealth of important information passed on at the Expedition Planning Conference has been retained.

School Leader Handover

All School leaders receive a session with either their dedicated Program Facilitator or Expedition Leader which details all specific aspects of the expedition in the weeks before departure.

The handover consists of an in-depth brief on the challengers’ disclosed medical conditions, a brief on the budget, an explanation of the risk management procedures and the Expedition handbook. The handbook contains all the crucial information that may be required on expedition including risk assessments, emergency contact details or information on other World Challenge teams in the area.

This personalised meeting is also a great opportunity for any last minute questions School Leaders may have.
