World Challenge and the Adventurous Journey

Students are able to complete the qualifying expedition for their Adventurous Journey of the award by undertaking a World Challenge expedition. In order to ensure that the expedition adheres to the conditions of the Adventurous Journey, World Challenge has selected 3 destinations where the treks meet these conditions.

Thailand Vietnam Malaysia
Thailand lies in the heart of south-east Asia. Northern Thailand is made up of idyllic mountains, primary forest and steamy jungles, whilst the coastline of the south has access to an array of picture-perfect desert islands. Teams will explore the country on foot, by waterway and sometimes by elephant! From working in schools to orphanages and community development schemes, project work here is fulfilling and unique. Visitors are often totally overwhelmed by the outstanding beauty of Vietnam, from the rice paddies which cover the coastal lowlands to the forest-covered mountains that run almost the entire length of the country to the coastline that includes countless stretches of unspoilt beaches. Projects are community based and involve renovation of care homes and orphanages. Located in central South-East Asia, Malaysia is blanketed by some of the world's most ancient rainforests. The mountains on the eastern side of the country descend steeply where they meet a spectacular sandy coastline which is home to many coral reefs. In the west, the plains have been cleared and cultivated, while the unsheltered east coast is home to tranquil beaches and dense jungle.

The schools responsibilities:

  • All participants must be within the qualifying age of the programme level.
  • The school or participant must have undergone the training and practice elements of the award
  • The school must ensure the team consists of between 4 and 7 DofE students if they are using the Challenge Phase for their qualifying expedition
  • Participants must have a similar ability or level of experience

Team numbers:
The team can be up to 18 challengers. If students wish to use the Challenging Phase for their qualifying journey, there must between 4 and 7 students on the team who are doing the qualifying journey for their award for it to be accepted by the DofE.

Training:
There are two training aspects that need to be undertaken by the students before the actual expedition.
1) Expedition Training which must be organised by the school or participant.
2) Practice Expedition which will be organised by the school or participant.

Supervision:
All leaders of these expeditions have been trained to ensure the DofE requirements are met.

World Challenge and the Residential Project/Service
Depending on the level of The Award that students are going for, they can decide to use their World Challenge experience towards either their Residential Project (gold only) or service. Every World Challenge expedition gives students the opportunity to live and work with a local school/community and help that community in any way needed. World Challenge will ensure that the duration of the project matches the requirements of the DofE. If a student wishes to use the expedition towards their residential project or service then there are no restrictions on numbers.
