World Challenge and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award
The Duke of Ed is an enriching program inviting young people aged 14-25 to participate in a number of activities over a set length of time. Participants design their own unique program centred around their interests and passions, and is entirely voluntary. It is the Duke of Ed's vision that all young people in Australia are empowered to explore their potential and achieve success through access and participation in this award.
World Challenge has been a specialist provider of expeditions for schools since 1987 and we have partnered up with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (*in certain states) to offer students the opportunity to complete aspects of their award through an expedition to one of 40 destinations around the World.
Students will experience a variety of challenging and fun activities, learn about the rich and diverse cultural history of the country and undertake a worthwhile service project and be able to use these experiences towards gaining their Award.
To give you some examples of how World Challenge can be used towards aspects of The Award, below is a table detailing each part of The Award and how we fit in:
| Skill | BUILD-UP There are a number of skills the student must learn in the build-up to their expedition. Students could learn Money Management skills in order to raise funds for their expedition, they could design and construct gear for their expedition or they could learn the language of the destination they are going to. These are just a few examples of what the can do; the possibilities are endless. | ||
| Service | PROJECT As part of a World Challenge expedition, students will spend at least 1 week on a project site. This could be a conservation site, a local school or community or an orphanage. Students could use some of the skills they have learnt in the build-up to teach, renovate, build and generally aid the community to better their way of life. This could go towards a small part of their 3-6 month service requirement. | ||
| Physical Recreation | BUILD-UP Students will need a certain degree of fitness to undertake a World Challenge expedition so they could complete their physical recreation element by undertaking a fitness program to prepare for the expedition. | ||
| Adventurous Journey | CHALLENGE Each World Challenge expedition has a Challenge Phase where students undertake a trek to push themselves both physically and mentally. | ||
| Residential Project (Gold award only) | PROJECT Each World Challenge expedition sees students undertake a project in a local school, orphanage, community or conservation area where students will have the chance to live with local communities. Students can decide whether to use this time towards their service or their residential project. | ||
Each state/country has slight variations about how the award can be used so please click on your state/country below for more information.

VIC/SA/TAS/WA/NZ
Students are able to use any aspect of the World Challenge experience towards the award. For example, they could find themselves doing a small portion of their service or their whole residential project in an orphanage in Cambodia. They could fulfil their skill by learning the language of the destination they are going to or could do their physical rec by getting fit for the expedition. In addition to all of the above, students are able to complete their qualifying journeys in one of 3 destinations around the world; Thailand, Vietnam or Malaysia.
